While Ernest and Mollie were receiving a blessing through one of the Osage Nation's most iconic dances, Ernest inadvertently spotted William dragging something away; curious, he followed and discovered William hacking at his uncle's corpse with an axe. William told Ernest that only by acquiring the Osage "headrights" could the entire Burkhart family regain its former glory, but Ernest did not agree. William did not press the issue, simply telling him he would understand in time. Soon, Ernest faced suspicion from Mollie's family; with police involvement, even Mollie began to doubt him—a shift that gradually altered Ernest's own mindset.
