Rowan found his younger brother, Cain—missing for twenty years—on a street corner. Cain was mentally impaired and behaved like a stray dog: guarding his food, biting, and licking people. Rowan fed him bread, taught him to bathe, and coaxed him into taking his medicine, gradually taming him into an obedient house dog. Yet, something about this "silly dog" began to feel off: snatching candy right out of Rowan's mouth, slobbering all over him, and pleading with red-rimmed eyes, "Don't send me away."
