Lily, a girl with an intellectual disability, and the adopted Malcolm grew up relying on each other. Malcolm returns to Chicago to inherit his family’s fortune and gets engaged. Lily embarrasses herself at his engagement party and is scolded by him. After donating blood to Malcolm's fiancée, Lily is diagnosed with a brain tumor and has only two months left to live. She is sent away and goes back to her hometown. As she lies dying, Malcolm rushes to her side. Lily passes away amid his lies and the chirping of birds, leaving him with lifelong regret.
