The Farmer and the Snake

"Set in a rural small town in the American Midwest, the story follows Jack, a young veteran who returns home. Building his soybean buying business on integrity, he consistently offers favorable terms to support local farmers. Victor, an out-of-town merchant, lures discontented farmers led by old Tom with an enticing offer of 12 US dollars per bushel — far above the market price. He persuades them to sell their entire year’s soybean harvest to him. Greed clouds the farmers’ judgment; mistakenly believing Jack has been pocketing the price difference, they fall out with him. It later emerges that Victor is a fraud. After seizing the soybeans, he only agrees to pay a mere 3 US dollars per bushel. Suffering devastating losses, the farmers unreasonably turn their anger on Jack. They repeatedly vandalize his warehouse. Crushed by disillusionment, Jack plans to abandon his local grain business and take a job in Chicago. This grounded rural narrative explores human bonds, trust, and the greed inherent in human nature."
