Stella discovers her husband Marc's affair with Haley, prompting her to apply for a classified research project to escape her marriage. She confronts Marc and Haley multiple times, exposing Marc's deceit and her resolve for divorce. Marc, desperate to retain Stella's valuable patent for his struggling company (linked to Haley's family), attempts to manipulate her into staying and having a baby. Stella, however, is determined to leave, burning their past and withdrawing her patent. She has several awkward encounters with William Briggs, a prominent researcher, who initially misjudges her.
