Young painter Lin Yao never painted eyes in his portraits, following his master's rule. A woman, Du Lanyin, commissioned a portrait of her deceased husband using his ashes. Lin Yao agreed, but refused to paint the eyes. After Du Lanyin left, Lin Yao's journalist friend Chen He visited. He found the request suspicious, suggesting Du Lanyin might be involved in her husband's death. The next day, Du Lanyin returned in a panic—eyes had appeared on the portrait. Lin Yao was horrified, recognizing his own brushstrokes. Chen He then arrived with a newspaper reporting Du Lanyin and her husband, Liu Jun, had died in a fire. That night, a man named Liu Jun visited the shop. He was the spitting image of the man in the portrait. He revealed his wife had actually died alongside a journalist named Chen He. Lin Yao was left terrified, wondering who—or what—had visited him.
