In Wood Village, the Wood family celebrates their newborn infant's 100-day birthday with a grand troupe performance. During this event, Diana Clark, a widow who married into the Wood family, comes to borrow money. She's struggling to raise her daughter, Phoebe Wood, alone in the mountains and can't afford the high university fees. Instead of receiving help, she's beaten. The villagers then arrange to sell her daughter to Mr. Baker for a bride price of 14 thousand dollars. In response, Diana decides to send Phoebe away from the backcountry.
